Microsoft Working on HoloLens Development

Virtual Reality first made major waves in the 1990s, as technology enthusiasts dreamed of being immersed in a digital world. As it turned out, the technology was not up to achieving expectations, and the concept lost popularity in the public sphere. Today, Virtual Reality is primed for a renaissance, with many variations on the experience. Holographic technology is a part of this revolution, particularly exemplified by the Microsoft HoloLens.

The Microsoft HoloLens is a piece of hardware that the user wears around the eyes. It projects 3D holographic images in front of the user. Quite remarkable! It can be used with any Windows application, but it is especially useful when used with software specifically designed for the HoloLens. For example, if you use Skype with the HoloLens, you can see the person you’re talking to in 3D, as if they’re in the room with you! HoloTour is another program that lets the user explore a location on Earth in 3D.

Because the HoloLens works best with software designed for it, Microsoft has opened up development software to the public. This will allow programmers to best engineer experiences that work with the HoloLens. Microsoft has even provided free files that best capture the capabilities of the hardware, so that programmers have a better idea of what it can do.

The HoloLens has incredible potential, from business applications all the way to gaming experiences we could have only imagined years ago. With the software development opened up, those experiences should come to us even sooner.
